What Are Superfoods?

You hear the term "superfood" more and more these days. It's like Superman has taken over the grocery store.

But what does the term "superfood" really mean? And what are superfoods? Really?
Let's go back to the Superman analogy . . . Superfoods are foods that are able to perform amazing feats when it comes to supporting your health. Just like Superman's ability to lift trains and airplanes, superfoods put super nutrition muscle into lifting your health up.
Superfoods can do this heavy lifting because:
  1. They have a huge concentration of phytochemicals, special plant molecules associated with a range of protective health benefits;
  2. They provide a broad spectrum of nutrition not found in many other foods. In addition to special phytochemicals and antioxidants, they may also provide an excellent supply of protein and other macronutrients.
  3. They include unique compounds that seem to help your body optimize how it functions.
There's really no official definition of superfoods. It's more of a term you can't help but use when you see the powerful nutrition in foods that merit this description.
Now just to clarify, some foods have merited the term "superfruits" because they are so phytonutrient rich. These are truly outstanding fruits because of the antioxidants they give you.
A few examples are acai berries, pomegranate, goji berries, blueberries and apples. All of these superfruits have high concentrations of special plant pigments and other phytonutrients that have been demonstrated in research to yield phenomenal results.
But while sometimes these antioxidant-rich superfruits get lumped into the superfood category, we think superfoods really go a step further . . .
Not only do superfoods have outstanding supplies of phytonutrients like a superfruit, they also give you something more to chew on.
Superfoods give your body a complete meal. Protein, phytonutrients and maybe even some healthy fats mixed in. Superfoods give you a high powered, complete meal in every single bite.

3 Great Superfoods That Boost Your Health To Another Level

LENTILS
Green, brown, black and salmon-colored, lentils come in an array of phytonutrient-rich colors. Thanks in part to their many disease-fighting phytochemicals as well as B vitamins, research has shown that lentils may help support bone, heart and immune health.

Also, pound-for-pound, lentils offer you more protein per ounce than any other legume.

SUN CHLORELLA
Ounce per ounce, more protein than a T-bone steak . . . more iron than liver . . . more RNA than sardines . . . more chlorophyll than any other plant on earth . . . able to leap tall buildings in a single bound – well, maybe not quite. . . But you get the idea . . .

The mother of all superfoods, Sun Chlorella has a higher concentration of nutrients than any of the other top superfoods. And when you take its special chorella growth factor (CGF) into account, you can see how it's over the top when it comes to super nutrition.

SPIRULINA
Sometimes confused with chlorella because of its single-cell status, spirulina is from an entirely different kingdom. It's in the phytobacteria kingdom.

Spirulina's special blue pigments and overall nutritional profile seems to bolster your health in many ways – from healthy cholesterol to cardiovascular health.

In addition to these special pigments, spirulina also provide your body with protein and healthy fats.

Each of these foods merits a place of respect in the food world due to their excellent nutrition. But none of them can match chlorella.
