How to Avoid Common Home Decorating Mistakes

How to Avoid Common Home Decorating Mistakes

Finding that great layout for a room and decorating a home can be both exciting and challenging. Everything from lighting to simple touches can truly make the room complete. However, there are a few common mistakes that many decorators fall back on without realizing it.

Complicated Organization
Many people decorate rooms such as a family room with an extensive number of photos. The idea is that they reduce the need for cluttered albums by the table and act as a conversation piece. However, placing too many photos on a gallery wall can make the room feel smaller. It can also be distracting to the eye. Complicated organization in the form of excessive baskets or accent tables can restrict the flow of the room as well.
Relying Too Much on Trends
Trends come and go and present one of the biggest issues with decorating a home. Some trends can be classic such as using natural pieces of furniture. However, overly done paint, carpeting and patterned furnishings can come and go easily. Creating accent walls that clash with the room such as too many photos on a gallery wall can be distracting.
Ignoring Height
One of the most common and least known decorating mistakes is ignoring the height of everything from pictures to curtain rods. Smaller rooms gain a tremendous boost by hanging curtain rods closer to the ceiling. Accentuating height towards the top draws the eyes upward and reduces the feeling of a small room. Keeping artwork at eye level is a good choice.
Poor Lighting
Lighting can make a dramatic difference in the room. Lighting decor as well as the style of the light bulb itself can make changes in a room. Using fluorescent lighting may save some on the electric bill, but the harsh color of fluorescent may make colors look muted or dull. Consider using a soft and warm full-spectrum bulb on all lamps in the room. Consider adding dimmers. Strategic placement of lighting is important for defining the purpose of the room.
Bad Furniture Flow
The furniture of a room should provide adequate room to move. Placing large sectionals or chairs in a small living room can make the flow difficult to navigate even in small gatherings. Using settees and smaller chairs are both elegant and a simple way to make the room flow better.
