How to Soothe Puffy Eyes
Puffy eyes can be caused by a variety of problems such as allergies to dust, dander or pollen, lack of sufficient sleep or poor eating habits. Although the dark, puffy circles and swollen lids can sometimes be covered by skillfully applied makeup, this does not treat the underlying problem. While puffiness can be a problem that should be addressed by an optometrist if the symptoms are severe or if the problem persists for many days, it can often be cleared up on one’s own following some basic home remedies. These remedies seek to tighten the skin surrounding the eyes or reduce the swelling under the thin, under eye and eyelid skin.
Cucumbers or Potatoes
Using vegetables that many people already have on hand is a great solution. Cool cucumber slices constrict blood vessels around the eyes while the starch in potato slices reduces inflammation. Lay one slice on each closed eye for about 15 minutes.
Green Tea Bags
The caffeine found in green tea bags also constricts blood vessels. Simply steep the bags in hot water for a few minutes and then allow them to cool until they are comfortable to the touch before laying them on closed eyes.
Cold Spoons
Cold spoons provide quick, cooling relief while relieving some of the inflammation. Several spoons can be placed in the refrigerator to cool for a half hour. Then the curved part of the spoon can be placed on the eyelid, switching out spoons when they get warm.
Cold Milk
This is another simple option because most people have milk in their refrigerators. Cool milk placed on cotton balls can often relieve swollen eyes within about 10 minutes of use.
Those who have an aloe vera plant or aloe vera extract can rub some around the eyes, being sure not to get any of it in the eye. Aloe vera is great for tightening the skin within a few minutes.
